Since 2001, film and photography have been an integral part of deufert&plischke’s performance work—and increasingly, they stand on their own. What began with a Rolleiflex and a Super 8 camera has evolved into a practice that resists technical perfection and instead seeks the imaginary: the possibility space of a moment. Everyone involved moves fluidly between behind and in front of the camera. Chance often directs the lens—sometimes the shutter clicks on its own. This openness gives way to images that are less composed than encountered, less fixed than felt.In their work, deufert&plischke playfully unlearn the historically masculine, mechanical gaze of the camera. What emerges are sensuous traces: images that don’t capture, but invite; that don't explain, but extend a moment into presence.
